As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we at RF Properties find ourselves reflecting on the incredible beauty of the wild turkey and the wonderful people we’ve had the privilege to work with this year.
Fall in Alabama is special. Football, hunting seasons, and the holidays make this unlike any other time of year. Today, we're highlighting the areas of Alabama that offer fall turkey hunting and the accessible land in those regions, while offering our heartfelt gratitude to our clients and partners who make our work a blessing.
Where Fall Turkey Season Takes Place in Alabama
Alabama’s fall turkey season is limited to Zone 3, which includes the following counties (and towns):
-
Clarke (Jackson, Thomasville)
-
Clay (Ashland, Lineville)
-
Covington (Andalusia, Opp)
-
Monroe (Monroeville, Frisco City)
-
Randolph (Roanoke, Wedowee)
-
Talladega (Sylacauga, Talladega)
These counties each offer a unique blend of rolling hills, pine forests, hardwood bottoms, and river tributaries, prime habitat for the eastern wild turkey. Hunters fortunate enough to enjoy fall turkey in these areas know the experience is special.
Public Lands in Zone 3
If you're planning a fall turkey hunt in Zone 3, you’ll find several excellent public tracts where wild turkeys roam. While the majority of people hunt private lands, these public areas provide access to thousands of acres of huntable land and a chance to enjoy the outdoors even if you don’t own land in the area or are visiting for the holidays.
1. Blue Spring Wildlife Management Area (Covington County)
-
One of the largest public tracts in Zone 3, offering over 24,000 acres of huntable habitat.
-
A mix of pine stands, hardwood drains, and upland ridges create ideal terrain for fall flocks.
-
Hunters need the appropriate WMA license and permits before entering the field.
2. Red Hills Wildlife Management Area (Monroe County)
-
Located in the heart of Monroe County, this WMA features rugged, rolling terrain and mixed pine-hardwood forest.
-
Managed in part by the Forever Wild program, which has preserved the significant Red Hills ecosystem.
-
Public hunting is available with appropriate licenses and WMA permits.
3. Hollins Wildlife Management Area (Clay & Talladega Counties)
-
Spread across both Clay and Talladega counties.
-
Known for varied topography, timber stands, and established wildlife openings.
-
Open to big game and turkey hunting with the required WMA and daily permits.
This area gives hunters an opportunity to chase fall gobblers across some of the most scenic terrain in the state.
